Genesis 1

1IN THE beginning God (prepared, formed, fashioned, and) created the heavens and the earth.(A)

2The earth was without form and an empty waste, and darkness was upon the face of the very great deep. The Spirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters.

3And God said, Let there be light; and there was light.

4And God saw that the light was good (suitable, pleasant) and He approved it; and God separated the light from the darkness.(B)

5And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

6And God said, Let there be a firmament [the expanse of the sky] in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters [below] from the waters [above].

7And God made the firmament [the expanse] and separated the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse. And it was so.

8And God called the firmament Heavens. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

9And God said, Let the waters under the heavens be collected into one place [of standing], and let the dry land appear. And it was so.

10God called the dry land Earth, and the accumulated waters He called Seas. And God saw that this was good (fitting, admirable) and He approved it.

11And God said, Let the earth put forth [tender] vegetation: plants yielding seed and fruit trees yielding fruit whose seed is in itself, each according to its kind, upon the earth. And it was so.

12The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed according to their own kinds and trees bearing fruit in which was their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good (suitable, admirable) and He approved it.

13And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.

14And God said, Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be signs and tokens [of God's provident care], and [to mark] seasons, days, and years,(C)

15And let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light upon the earth. And it was so.

16And God made the two great lights--the greater light (the sun) to rule the day and the lesser light (the moon) to rule the night. He also made the stars.

17And God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light upon the earth,

18To rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good (fitting, pleasant) and He approved it.

19And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

20And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly and swarm with living creatures, and let birds fly over the earth in the open expanse of the heavens.

21God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good (suitable, admirable) and He approved it.

22And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let the fowl multiply in the earth.

23And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

24And God said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creeping things, and [wild] beasts of the earth according to their kinds. And it was so.

25And God made the [wild] beasts of the earth according to their kinds, and domestic animals according to their kinds, and everything that creeps upon the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good (fitting, pleasant) and He approved it.

26God said, Let Us [Father, Son, and Holy Spirit] make mankind in Our image, after Our likeness, and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the [tame] beasts, and over all of the earth, and over everything that creeps upon the earth.(D)

27So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them.(E)

28And God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it [using all its vast resources in the service of God and man]; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and over every living creature that moves upon the earth.

29And God said, See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the land and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food.

30And to all the animals on the earth and to every bird of the air and to everything that creeps on the ground--to everything in which there is the breath of life--I have given every green plant for food. And it was so.

31And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good (suitable, pleasant) and He approved it completely. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

Genesis 2

1THUS THE heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

2And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done.(F)

3And God blessed (spoke good of) the seventh day, set it apart as His own, and hallowed it, because on it God rested from all His work which He had created and done.(G)

4This is the history of the heavens and of the earth when they were created. In the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens--

5When no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up, for the Lord God had not [yet] caused it to rain upon the earth and there was no man to till the ground,

6But there went up a mist (fog, vapor) from the land and watered the whole surface of the ground--

7Then the Lord God formed man from the [a]dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath or spirit of life, and man became a living being.(H)

8And the Lord God planted a garden toward the east, in Eden [delight]; and there He put the man whom He had formed (framed, constituted).

9And out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight or to be desired--good (suitable, pleasant) for food; the tree of life also in the center of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of [the difference between] good and evil and blessing and calamity.(I)

10Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four [river] heads.

11The first is named Pishon; it is the one flowing around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.

12The gold of that land is of high quality; bdellium (pearl?) and onyx stone are there.

13The second river is named Gihon; it is the one flowing around the whole land of Cush.

14The third river is named Hiddekel [the Tigris]; it is the one flowing east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

15And the Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to tend and guard and keep it.

    16And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, You may freely eat of every tree of the garden;

17But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and blessing and calamity you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.

18Now the Lord God said, It is not good (sufficient, satisfactory) that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper meet (suitable, adapted, complementary) for him.

19And out of the ground the Lord God formed every [wild] beast and living creature of the field and every bird of the air and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them; and whatever Adam called every living creature, that was its name.

20And Adam gave names to all the livestock and to the birds of the air and to every [wild] beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found a helper meet (suitable, adapted, complementary) for him.

21And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam; and while he slept, He took one of his ribs or a part of his side and closed up the [place with] flesh.

22And the rib or part of his side which the Lord God had taken from the man He built up and made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.

23Then Adam said, This [creature] is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of a man.

24Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall become united and cleave to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.(J)

25And the man and his wife were both naked and were not embarrassed or ashamed in each other's presence.

Genesis 3

1NOW THE serpent was more subtle and crafty than any living creature of the field which the Lord God had made. And he [Satan] said to the woman, Can it really be that God has said, You shall not eat from every tree of the garden?(K)

2And the woman said to the serpent, We may eat the fruit from the trees of the garden,

3Except the fruit from the tree which is in the middle of the garden. God has said, You shall not eat of it, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.

4But the serpent said to the woman, You shall not surely die,(L)

5For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing the difference between good and evil and blessing and calamity.

6And when the woman saw that the tree was good (suitable, pleasant) for food and that it was delightful to look at, and a tree to be desired in order to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she gave some also to her husband, and he ate.

7Then the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves apronlike girdles.

8And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

9But the Lord God called to Adam and said to him, Where are you?

10He said, I heard the sound of You [walking] in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; and I hid myself.

11And He said, Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you that you should not eat?

12And the man said, The woman whom You gave to be with me--she gave me [fruit] from the tree, and I ate.

13And the Lord God said to the woman, What is this you have done? And the woman said, The serpent beguiled (cheated, outwitted, and deceived) me, and I ate.

14And the Lord God said to the serpent, Because you have done this, you are cursed above all [domestic] animals and above every [wild] living thing of the field; upon your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust [and what it contains] all the days of your life.

15And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her [b]Offspring; He will bruise and tread your head underfoot, and you will lie in wait and bruise His heel.(M)

16To the woman He said, I will greatly multiply your grief and your suffering in pregnancy and the pangs of childbearing; with spasms of distress you will bring forth children. Yet your desire and craving will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.

17And to Adam He said, Because you have listened and given heed to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, saying, You shall not eat of it, the ground is under a curse because of you; in sorrow and toil shall you eat [of the fruits] of it all the days of your life.

18Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth for you, and you shall eat the plants of the field.

19In the sweat of your face shall you eat bread until you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you shall return.

20The man called his wife's name Eve [life spring], because she was the mother of all the living.

21For Adam also and for his wife the Lord God made long coats (tunics) of skins and clothed them.

22And the Lord God said, Behold, the man has become like one of Us [the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit], to know [how to distinguish between] good and evil and blessing and calamity; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live [c]forever--

23Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the Garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken.

24So [God] drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the Garden of Eden the [d]cherubim and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep and guard the way to the tree of life.(N)

Genesis 4

1AND ADAM knew Eve as his wife, and she became pregnant and bore Cain; and she said, I have gotten and gained a man with the help of the Lord.

2And [next] she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

3And in the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground.

4And Abel brought of the firstborn of his flock and of the fat portions. And the Lord had respect and regard for Abel and for his offering,(O)

5But for [e]Cain and his offering He had no respect or regard. So Cain was exceedingly angry and indignant, and he looked sad and depressed.

6And the Lord said to Cain, Why are you angry? And why do you look sad and depressed and dejected?

7If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you, but you must master it.

8And Cain said to his brother, [f]Let us go out to the field. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.(P)

9And the Lord said to Cain, Where is Abel your brother? And he said, I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?

10And [the Lord] said, What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to Me from the ground.

11And now you are cursed by reason of the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother's [shed] blood from your hand.

12When you till the ground, it shall no longer yield to you its strength; you shall be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth [in perpetual exile, a degraded outcast].

13Then Cain said to the Lord, My punishment is [g]greater than I can bear.

14Behold, You have driven me out this day from the face of the land, and from Your face I will be hidden; and I will be a fugitive and a vagabond and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.

15And the Lord said to him, [h]Therefore, if anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the Lord set a [i]mark or sign upon Cain, lest anyone finding him should kill him.

16So Cain went away from the presence of the Lord and dwelt in the land of Nod [wandering], east of Eden.

17And Cain's wife [one of Adam's offspring] became pregnant and bore Enoch; and Cain built a [j]city and named it after his son Enoch.

18To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad was the father of Mehujael, and Mehujael the father of Methusael, and Methusael the father of Lamech.

19And Lamech took two wives; the name of the one was Adah and of the other was Zillah.

20Adah bore Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have cattle and purchase possessions.

21His brother's name was Jubal; he was the father of all those who play the lyre and pipe.

22Zillah bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all [cutting] instruments of bronze and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

23Lamech said to his wives, Adah and Zillah, Hear my voice; you wives of Lamech, listen to what I say; for I have slain a man [merely] for wounding me, and a young man [only] for striking and bruising me.

24If Cain is avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech [will be avenged] seventy-sevenfold.

25And Adam's wife again became pregnant, and she bore a son and called his name Seth. For God, she said, has appointed for me another child instead of Abel, for Cain slew him.

26And to Seth also a son was born, whom he named Enosh. At that time men began to call [upon God] by the name of the Lord.

Genesis 5

1THIS IS the book (the written record, the history) of the generations of the offspring of Adam. When God created man, He made him in the likeness of God.

2He created them male and female and blessed them and named them [both] Adam at the time they were created.

3When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, after his image; and he named him Seth.

4After he had Seth, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters.

5So altogether Adam lived 930 years, and he died.

6When Seth was 105 years old, Enosh was born.

7Seth lived after the birth of Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters.

8So Seth lived 912 years, and he died.

9When Enosh was 90 years old, Kenan was born to him.

10Enosh lived after the birth of Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters.

11So Enosh lived 905 years, and he died.

12When Kenan was 70 years old, Mahalalel was born.

13Kenan lived after the birth of Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters.

14So Kenan lived 910 years, and he died.

15When Mahalalel was 65 years old, Jared was born.

16Mahalalel lived after the birth of Jared 830 years and had other sons and daughters.

17So Mahalalel lived 895 years, and he died.

18When Jared was 162 years old, Enoch was born.

19Jared lived after the birth of Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters.

20So Jared lived 962 years, and he died.

21When Enoch was 65 years old, Methuselah was born.

22Enoch walked [in habitual fellowship] with God after the birth of Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters.

23So all the days of Enoch were 365 years.

24And Enoch walked [in habitual fellowship] with God; and he was not, for God took him [home with Him].(Q)

25When Methuselah was 187 years old, Lamech was born to him.

26Methuselah lived after the birth of Lamech 782 years and had other sons and daughters.

27So Methuselah lived 969 years, and he died.

28When Lamech was 182 years old, a son was born.

29He named him Noah, saying, This one shall bring us relief and comfort from our work and the [grievous] toil of our hands due to the ground being cursed by the Lord.

30Lamech lived after the birth of Noah 595 years and had other sons and daughters.

31So all the days of [k]Lamech were 777 years, and he died.

32After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Footnotes:

  1. Genesis 2:7 The same essential chemical elements are found in man and animal life that are in the soil. This scientific fact was not known to man until recent times, but God was displaying it here.
  2. Genesis 3:15 Christ fulfills through his victory over Satan the wonderful promise here spoken. See also Isa. 9:6; Matt. 1:23; Luke 1:31; Rom. 16:20; Gal. 4:4; Rev. 12:17.
  3. Genesis 3:22 This sentence is left unfinished, as if to hasten to avert the tragedy suggested of men living on forever in their now fallen state.
  4. Genesis 3:24 Cherubim are ministering spirits manifesting God's invisible presence and symbolizing His action (E.F. Harrison et al., eds., Baker's Dictionary of Theology).
  5. Genesis 4:5 In bringing the offering he did, Cain denied that he was a sinful creature under the sentence of divine condemnation. He insisted on approaching God on the ground of personal worthiness. Instead of accepting God's way, he offered to God the fruits of the ground which God had cursed. He presented the product of his own toil, the work of his own hands, and God refused to receive it (Arthur W. Pink, Gleanings in Genesis).
  6. Genesis 4:8 The Hebrew omits this clause, but various other texts show that it was originally included.
  7. Genesis 4:13 Some ancient versions read, "too great to be forgiven!"
  8. Genesis 4:15 Some versions read, "Not so!"
  9. Genesis 4:15 Many commentators believe this sign not to have been like a brand on the forehead, but something awesome about Cain's appearance that made people dread and avoid him.
  10. Genesis 4:17 C.H. Dodd (cited by Adam Clarke, The Holy Bible with A Commentary) shows that it would have been possible for Adam and Eve, in the more than 100 years he estimates may have elapsed since their union, to have had over 32,000 descendants at the time Cain went to Nod, all of them having sprung from Cain and Abel, who married their sisters.
  11. Genesis 5:31 It is now well known that the age of mankind cannot be reckoned in years from the facts listed in genealogies, for there are numerous known intentional gaps in them. For example, as B. B. Warfield (Studies in Theology) points out, the genealogy in Matt. 1:1-17 omits the three kings, Ahaziah, Jehoash, and Amaziah, and indicates that Joram (Matt. 1: begat Uzziah, who was his great-great-grandson. The mistaking of compressed genealogies as bases for chronology has been very misleading. So far, the dates in years of very early Old Testament events are altogether speculative and relative, and the tendency is to put them farther and farther back into antiquity.

Psalm 68

To the Chief Musician. A Psalm of David. A song.
1GOD IS [already] beginning to arise, and His enemies to scatter; let them also who hate Him flee before Him!

2As smoke is driven away, so drive them away; as wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish before the presence of God.

3But let the [uncompromisingly] righteous be glad; let them be in high spirits and glory before God, yes, let them [jubilantly] rejoice!

4Sing to God, sing praises to His name, cast up a highway for Him Who rides through the deserts--His name is the Lord--be in high spirits and glory before Him!

5A father of the fatherless and a judge and protector of the widows is God in His holy habitation.

6God places the solitary in families and gives the desolate a home in which to dwell; He leads the prisoners out to prosperity; but the rebellious dwell in a parched land.

7O God, when You went forth before Your people, when You marched through the wilderness--Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!--

8The earth trembled, the heavens also poured down [rain] at the presence of God; yonder Sinai quaked at the presence of God, the God of Israel.

9You, O God, did send a plentiful rain; You did restore and confirm Your heritage when it languished and was weary.

10Your flock found a dwelling place in it; You, O God, in Your goodness did provide for the poor and needy.

11The Lord gives the word [of power]; the women who bear and publish [the news] are a great host.

12The kings of the enemies' armies, they flee, they flee! She who tarries at home divides the spoil [left behind].

13Though you [the slackers] may lie among the sheepfolds [in slothful ease, yet for Israel] the wings of a dove are covered with silver, its pinions excessively green with gold [are trophies taken from the enemy].

14When the Almighty scattered kings in [the land], it was as when it snows on Zalmon [a wooded hill near Shechem].

15Is Mount Bashan the high mountain of summits, Mount Bashan [east of the Jordan] the mount of God?

16Why do you look with grudging and envy, you many-peaked mountains, at the mountain [of the city called Zion] which God has desired for His dwelling place? Yes, the Lord will dwell in it forever.

17The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands upon thousands. The Lord is among them as He was in Sinai, [so also] in the Holy Place (the sanctuary in Jerusalem).

18[a]You have ascended on high. You have led away captive a train of vanquished foes; You have received gifts of men, yes, of the rebellious also, that the Lord God might dwell there with them.(A)

19Blessed be the Lord, Who bears our burdens and carries us day by day, even the God Who is our salvation! Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

20God is to us a God of deliverances and salvation; and to God the Lord belongs escape from death [setting us free].

21But God will shatter the heads of His enemies, the hairy scalp of such a one as goes on still in his trespasses and guilty ways.

22The Lord said, I will bring back [your enemies] from Bashan; I will bring them back from the depths of the [Red] Sea,

23That you may crush them, dipping your foot in blood, that the tongues of your dogs may have their share from the foe.

24They see Your goings, O God, even the [solemn processions] of my God, my King, into the sanctuary [in holiness].

25The singers go in front, the players on instruments last; between them the maidens are playing on tambourines.

26Bless, give thanks, and gratefully praise God in full congregations, even the Lord, O you who are from [Jacob] the fountain of Israel.

27There is little Benjamin in the lead [in the procession], the princes of Judah and their company, the princes of Zebulun, and the princes of Naphtali.

28Your God has commanded your strength [your might in His service and impenetrable hardness to temptation]; O God, display Your might and strengthen what You have wrought for us!

29[Out of respect] for Your temple at Jerusalem kings shall bring gifts to You.

30Rebuke the wild beasts dwelling among the reeds [in Egypt], the herd of bulls (the leaders) with the calves of the peoples; trample underfoot those who lust for tribute money; scatter the peoples who delight in war.

31Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall hasten to stretch out her hands [with the offerings of submission] to God.

32Sing to God, O kingdoms of the earth, sing praises to the Lord! Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

33[Sing praises] to Him Who rides upon the heavens, the ancient heavens; behold, He sends forth His voice, His mighty voice.

34Ascribe power and strength to God; His majesty is over Israel, and His strength and might are in the skies.

35O God, awe-inspiring, profoundly impressive, and terrible are You out of Your holy places; the God of Israel Himself gives strength and fullness of might to His people. Blessed be God!

Psalm 69

To the Chief Musician; [set to the tune of] "Lilies." [A Psalm] of David.
1SAVE ME, O God, for the waters have come up to my neck [they threaten my life].

2I sink in deep mire, where there is no foothold; I have come into deep waters, where the floods overwhelm me.

3I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched; my eyes fail with waiting [hopefully] for my God.

4Those who hate me without cause are more than the hairs of my head; those who would cut me off and destroy me, being my enemies wrongfully, are many and mighty. I am [forced] to restore what I did not steal.(B)

5O God, You know my folly and blundering; my sins and my guilt are not hidden from You.

6Let not those who wait and hope and look for You, O Lord of hosts, be put to shame through me; let not those who seek and inquire for and require You [as their vital necessity] be brought to confusion and dishonor through me, O God of Israel.

7Because for Your sake I have borne taunt and reproach; confusion and shame have covered my face.

8I have become a stranger to my brethren, and an alien to my mother's children.(C)

9For zeal for Your house has eaten me up, and the reproaches and insults of those who reproach and insult You have fallen upon me.(D)

    10When I wept and humbled myself with fasting, I was jeered at and humiliated;

11When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword (an object of scorn) to them.

12They who sit in [the city's] gate talk about me, and I am the song of the drunkards.

13But as for me, my prayer is to You, O Lord. At an acceptable and opportune time, O God, in the multitude of Your mercy and the abundance of Your loving-kindness hear me, and in the truth and faithfulness of Your salvation answer me.

14Rescue me out of the mire, and let me not sink; let me be delivered from those who hate me and from out of the deep waters.

15Let not the floodwaters overflow and overwhelm me, neither let the deep swallow me up nor the [dug] pit [with water perhaps in the bottom] close its mouth over me.

16Hear and answer me, O Lord, for Your loving-kindness is sweet and comforting; according to Your plenteous tender mercy and steadfast love turn to me.

17Hide not Your face from Your servant, for I am in distress; O answer me speedily!

18Draw close to me and redeem me; ransom and set me free because of my enemies [lest they glory in my prolonged distress]!

19You know my reproach and my shame and my dishonor; my adversaries are all before You [fully known to You].

20Insults and reproach have broken my heart; I am full of heaviness and I am distressingly sick. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.

21They gave me also gall [poisonous and bitter] for my food, and in my thirst they gave me vinegar (a soured wine) to drink.(E)

22Let their own table [with all its abundance and luxury] become a snare to them; and when they are secure in peace [or at their sacrificial feasts, let it become] a trap to them.

23Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and make their loins tremble continually [from terror, dismay, and feebleness].

24Pour out Your indignation upon them, and let the fierceness of Your burning anger catch up with them.

25Let their habitation and their encampment be a desolation; let no one dwell in their tents.(F)

26For they pursue and persecute him whom You have smitten, and they gossip about those whom You have wounded, [adding] to their grief and pain.

27Let one [unforgiven] perverseness and iniquity accumulate upon another for them [in Your book], and let them not come into Your righteousness or be justified and acquitted by You.

28Let them be blotted out of the book of the living and the book of life and not be enrolled among the [uncompromisingly] righteous (those upright and in right standing with God).(G)

29But I am poor, sorrowful, and in pain; let Your salvation, O God, set me up on high.

30I will praise the name of God with a song and will magnify Him with thanksgiving,

31And it will please the Lord better than an ox or a bullock that has horns and hoofs.

32The humble shall see it and be glad; you who seek God, inquiring for and requiring Him [as your first need], let your hearts revive and live!(H)

33For the Lord hears the poor and needy and despises not His prisoners (His miserable and wounded ones).

34Let heaven and earth praise Him, the seas and everything that moves in them.

    35For God will save Zion and rebuild the cities of Judah; and [His servants] shall remain and dwell there and have it in their possession;

36The children of His servants shall inherit it, and those who love His name shall dwell in it.

Psalm 70

To the Chief Musician. [A Psalm] of David, to bring to remembrance or make memorial.
1MAKE HASTE, O God, to deliver me; make haste to help me, O Lord!

2Let them be put to shame and confounded that seek and demand my life; let them be turned backward and brought to confusion and dishonor who desire and delight in my hurt.

3Let them be turned back and appalled because of their shame and disgrace who say, Aha, aha!

4May all those who seek, inquire of and for You, and require You [as their vital need] rejoice and be glad in You; and may those who love Your salvation say continually, Let God be magnified!

5But I am poor and needy; hasten to me, O God! You are my Help and my Deliverer; O Lord, do not tarry!

Psalm 71

1IN YOU, O Lord, do I put my trust and confidently take refuge; let me never be put to shame or confusion!

2Deliver me in Your righteousness and cause me to escape; bow down Your ear to me and save me!

3Be to me a rock of refuge in which to dwell, and a sheltering stronghold to which I may continually resort, which You have appointed to save me, for You are my Rock and my Fortress.

4Rescue me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the grasp of the unrighteous and ruthless man.

5For You are my hope; O Lord God, You are my trust from my youth and the source of my confidence.

6Upon You have I leaned and relied from birth; You are He Who took me from my mother's womb and You have been my benefactor from that day. My praise is continually of You.

7I am as a wonder and surprise to many, but You are my strong refuge.

8My mouth shall be filled with Your praise and with Your honor all the day.

9Cast me not off nor send me away in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent and my powers fail.

10For my enemies talk against me; those who watch for my life consult together,

11Saying, God has forsaken him; pursue and persecute and take him, for there is none to deliver him.

12O God, be not far from me! O my God, make haste to help me!

13Let them be put to shame and consumed who are adversaries to my life; let them be covered with reproach, scorn, and dishonor who seek and require my hurt.

14But I will hope continually, and will praise You yet more and more.

15My mouth shall tell of Your righteous acts and of Your deeds of salvation all the day, for their number is more than I know.

16I will come in the strength and with the mighty acts of the Lord God; I will mention and praise Your righteousness, even Yours alone.

17O God, You have taught me from my youth, and hitherto have I declared Your wondrous works.

18Yes, even when I am old and gray-headed, O God, forsake me not, [but keep me alive] until I have declared Your mighty strength to [this] generation, and Your might and power to all that are to come.

19Your righteousness also, O God, is very high [reaching to the heavens], You Who have done great things; O God, who is like You, or who is Your equal?

20You Who have shown us [all] troubles great and sore will quicken us again and will bring us up again from the depths of the earth.

21Increase my greatness (my honor) and turn and comfort me.

22I will also praise You with the harp, even Your truth and faithfulness, O my God; unto You will I sing praises with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel.

23My lips shall shout for joy when I sing praises to You, and my inner being, which You have redeemed.

24My tongue also shall talk of Your righteousness all the day long; for they are put to shame, for they are confounded, who seek and demand my hurt.
